The Vegas Golden Knights are Pacific Division champions for the fifth time in franchise history, securing the title with a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena.
The win locks the Knights into the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and sets up a first-round playoff series against the Utah Mammoth, beginning this weekend.
Vegas (39-26-17) closed the regular season with a 7-0-1 surge under interim coach John Tortorella, who took over after Bruce Cassidy was fired on March 29. The Knights became the 10th NHL team to win a division title following an in-season coaching change.
Mitch Marner broke a 1-1 tie just 1:23 into the third period, deflecting a Brayden McNabb point shot from the high slot for his 24th goal of the season. Reilly Smith added two goals in the final frame, including a one-timer with 7:59 left and a delayed-penalty goal with 3:24 remaining.
Jack Eichel recorded two assists, finishing his second straight 90-point season. Defenseman Shea Theodore also scored for the Knights, tying the game with a wrist shot from the right circle with 2:25 left in the second period.
Goaltender Carter Hart made 22 saves to improve to 6-0 since returning from injury, allowing just 10 goals in that span. He has solidified his role as the team’s No. 1 goalie heading into the postseason.
Seattle (34-36-11) opened the scoring 2:24 into the second period when Shane Wright pounced on a rebound. Kraken rookie goalie Nikke Kokko stopped 22 shots but allowed three goals in the third period.
The Knights’ five division titles since entering the league in 2017-18 are the most among all NHL teams, ahead of Colorado, Washington, and Carolina, each with four.
