Golden Knights’ third-period collapse leads to shootout loss in Tortorella’s first defeat

SEATTLE — John Tortorella’s tenure as Golden Knights coach will have to wait for its first win after Vegas let a two-goal third-period lead slip away in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday at Climate Pledge Arena.

Brett Howden extended the Knights’ lead to 3-1 just 1:11 into the third period, scoring his third goal in four games. But Seattle answered with two quick strikes: Berkly Catton at 6:11 and Bobby McMann at 9:16 to tie the game 3-3 and force overtime.

Catton also scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout, handing Vegas (36-26-17) its first loss under Tortorella, who took over after the previous coach was fired earlier this week.

Captain Mark Stone scored twice, giving him 26 goals on the season — his most since 2014-15. His second goal came 55 seconds into the second period on a power-play backdoor tap-in, staking Vegas to a 2-0 lead. Stone also surpassed his point total from last season (67) in nine fewer games.

Adin Hill made 30 saves in his first start since March 30. He stopped all 10 Seattle shots in the first period, including a partial breakaway by McMann. The Kraken finally beat him late in the second period on Jared McCann’s one-timer from the top of the right circle with 2:06 left.

Vegas is now tied with Anaheim for second place in the Pacific Division, one point behind Edmonton with three games remaining. The Knights conclude their four-game road trip Saturday against the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche.
