The Vegas Golden Knights can punch their ticket to the postseason Saturday with a victory over the Colorado Avalanche, the NHL’s Presidents’ Trophy winners. A 5 p.m. puck drop at Ball Arena offers the Knights their first chance to clinch a playoff spot for the eighth time in nine seasons.
Vegas enters the day with a magic number of two after Thursday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Seattle Kraken. Despite squandering a two-goal lead, the Knights gained a point that kept their path clear. The Los Angeles Kings’ 4-1 win over Vancouver did not help, but the Utah Mammoth’s 4-1 victory over Nashville provided some assistance.
Scenarios to clinch Saturday
The Knights can clinch with a win in any fashion over Colorado. Alternatively, they can secure a spot if Nashville loses to Minnesota (2 p.m.) and Winnipeg loses at Philadelphia (4 p.m.), combined with the Knights earning at least one point against the Avalanche. A third scenario: Nashville and Winnipeg both lose in regulation, and San Jose loses to Vancouver (7 p.m.) in any fashion.
Saturday features 30 of 32 NHL teams in action, meaning the Knights could have clarity before their game even begins.
