The Athletics placed outfielder and designated hitter Brent Rooker on the 10-day injured list Friday due to a left oblique strain, snapping his streak of 213 consecutive games played. The injury occurred in the first inning of Thursday’s 1-0 win over the New York Yankees, when Rooker fouled off a changeup and immediately grabbed his side. He left the game after the at-bat.
Rooker’s streak, which began Aug. 15, 2024, is the club’s fourth longest since 2000. He will miss his first game Friday night against the New York Mets, the same venue where the streak started two years ago.
Manager Mark Kotsay said no timeline has been set for Rooker’s return. “We’re hopeful that Rook can get back as soon as possible,” Kotsay said.
Rooker, who signed a five-year, $60 million contract in January 2025, hit .262 with 30 homers and 89 RBIs last season while playing every game and earning an All-Star nod. He also participated in the Home Run Derby. This season, he is batting .146 with two home runs and seven RBIs, though six of those RBIs came in the three games before Thursday.
To fill the roster spot, the Athletics recalled infielder Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas. Gelof, who was hitting .366 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 11 games for the Aviators, has an on-base percentage of .519.
Rooker said after Thursday’s game, “I’m a little tight and a little sore, but we’ll get imaging done and see what that says.”
