DENVER — The Vegas Golden Knights are on the verge of securing a playoff spot Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche, riding a 4-0-1 surge under new head coach John Tortorella. The team fired Bruce Cassidy on March 29 after a stretch of six losses in seven games, a move that stunned the league. Now, with an eighth postseason berth in nine years within reach, the locker room has found new life.
Culture Shift in Las Vegas
Tortorella has brought a more direct, aggressive style. Defensemen are driving the net and playing closer to the goal line, creating a lethal five-man attack. The five blue liners who have played all five games under Tortorella have combined for 17 points, with four scoring goals. Brayden McNabb and Shea Theodore are each plus-7.
“It was a bit of a reset for us,” captain Mark Stone said. “We were a little stale. We just weren’t getting over the top, I guess. We were playing some good hockey the last three, four weeks, it’s just we didn’t have that extra juice.”
Cassidy Era Friction
Under Cassidy, players respected his tactical mind but sometimes felt left in the dark about lineup decisions. The tension dated back to the 2024 playoffs, when Cassidy chose Adin Hill over Logan Thompson in Game 5 of the first round against Dallas. The Knights lost in seven games, and Thompson requested a trade. General manager Kelly McCrimmon said, “I enjoyed working with Bruce. I don’t think we had an argument or disagreement in four years.”
Tortorella’s Message Resonates
Players have bought into Tortorella’s mindset. “You’ve got to play free,” defenseman Noah Hanifin said. “You’ve got to go out and not be afraid to make mistake. (Tortorella’s) said, ‘If you’re going to make a mistake, make a mistake being aggressive.’”
Tortorella hasn’t delivered any fiery speeches yet, but his directness has resonated. He tells it like it is, from lineup decisions to mid-game line changes. “My job is to allow these guys to play, to guide them on the right road that we think we need them to be, and then they take over,” he said.
The Knights face the league-leading Avalanche at Ball Arena on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ABC.
