No. 3 Coronado punched its ticket to the Class 5A state championship game with a commanding 76-55 victory over No. 2 Bishop Gorman in the semifinals Wednesday at Valley High School. The Cougars, seeking the program’s first state title, will face No. 1 Liberty in the final Friday at 7 p.m.
Coronado (16-8) led from start to finish, building a 24-9 advantage after the first quarter and never letting the two-time defending state champions back into the game. Four-star junior Munir Greig led the way with 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Missouri State commit Amare Oba added 14 points, and DeVaughn Dorrough contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds.
“It’s always good,” Cougars coach Jeff Kaufman said. “You feel great for the kids. They play hard, and we go year-round. For them to reach the very last game — we got one more to go, and they know that.”
Gorman (18-10) edged Coronado 62-58 in the regular season on Jan. 10, but the Cougars got revenge with a wire-to-wire performance. Tyler Johnson and Tyler Bright each scored 13 points for the Gaels.
“Coming out and playing them again was really good,” Greig said. “I knew we were going to win the game because of our energy, and we were locked in on the way we were warming up.”
In the other semifinal, No. 1 Liberty (23-5) defeated No. 5 Democracy Prep 61-50. Senior guard Tyus Thomas had 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Patriots. Tayshawn Caesar added 15 points, and Dante Steward contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Kaden Arnold led Democracy Prep (14-13) with 13 points.
Liberty beat Coronado 63-59 in the regular season on Feb. 2. The state final is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Valley High School.
