The Vegas Golden Knights secured their top goaltending prospect Sunday night, signing Carl Lindbom to a three-year contract with an average annual value of $900,000. The deal comes just days before the 23-year-old was set to become a restricted free agent when the market opens Wednesday.
Lindbom, a seventh-round pick in 2021, has rapidly risen through the organization’s ranks. Over the past two seasons with the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL, he posted a 42-30-11 record with a 2.41 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. Last season, he went 24-5-8, including an 18-0-2 mark in the second half, leading Henderson to the Calder Cup Playoffs. He earned AHL All-Star Second Team honors and represented the club in the All-Star Game.
The Stockholm native made his NHL debut on Oct. 26 in Tampa Bay, stopping 26 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Lightning. He dropped his first six starts before recording his first win Nov. 29 at home against the San Jose Sharks.
Lindbom is expected to be the No. 1 goalie in Henderson next season, but with the futures of Akira Schmid and Adin Hill uncertain, he could compete for the backup role at the NHL level. The Knights still have six restricted free agents to tender qualifying offers to by 2 p.m. Monday if they are not re-signed, most notably Schmid, who led the team with 29 starts last season.
