WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Miami Marlins erupted for six home runs Friday night, pounding the Athletics 12-5 at Sutter Health Park. Kyle Stowers led the barrage with two homers and a 4-for-5 performance, his second four-hit game of the season.
Miami jumped on A’s opener Jack Perkins immediately. The first five batters of the game scored, capped by Heriberto Hernández’s three-run homer to left-center, a 414-foot blast that made it 5-0 before an out was recorded. Liam Hicks scored on Xavier Edwards’ bases-loaded walk, Stowers came home on a passed ball, and Jakob Marsee added a solo shot.
The Athletics clawed back with a five-run outburst in the third and fourth innings. Nick Kurtz crushed a two-run homer in the third, and Jeff McNeil followed with a three-run double in the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-5.
But Stowers answered with a solo homer in the sixth and a two-run shot in the eighth, restoring Miami’s comfortable lead. Owen Caissie tacked on a two-run homer in the ninth to seal the win.
Marlins starter Tyler Phillips lasted only 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, but five relievers combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Lake Bachar (1-0) earned the win with two hitless frames.
Perkins (2-4) took the loss, surrendering seven hits and seven runs over three innings while striking out eight. Kurtz and Carlos Cortes each had two hits for the A’s, who fell to 34-48.
The A’s are moving to Las Vegas in 2028, beginning play in a ballpark being built on the Strip.
