Allegiant Stadium hosted a doubleheader of flag football excellence Thursday, as Sierra Vista and Shadow Ridge claimed NIAA state championships in the 4A and 5A divisions, respectively. The games showcased the sport’s rapid growth in Southern Nevada, with dominant performances and record-breaking stats.

Sierra Vista routed Green Valley 44-7 in the Class 4A final, powered by a historic outing from junior quarterback Amaya Wusstig. She completed 20 of 33 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns, leading the Mountain Lions to their first flag football state title. Wusstig credited the team’s resilience after a rocky start to the season marked by injuries.

In the 5A title game, Shadow Ridge blanked Bishop Gorman 12-0. Senior wide receiver and defensive back Jaylani Palmer starred with 151 receiving yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Palmer, who recently participated in a Pro Bowl showcase for the nation’s top 32 players, said the team’s goal was to finish as the best in the state.

Coaches attribute the rising talent level to earlier development and rule changes that emphasize speed and finesse over physical contact. Sierra Vista coach Dan Bagwell noted that players now start flag football before high school, accelerating skill acquisition. Shadow Ridge coach Matt Nighswonger, who has coached flag for 11 years, said the sport has exploded in the last five to six years, with teams now watching film, trading game tape, and scheming like never before.

The improvements were on full display Thursday, from Wusstig’s pinpoint passing to Palmer’s two-way dominance. With college scholarships and Olympic inclusion in 2028 on the horizon, flag football in Nevada continues its upward trajectory.
