Wusstig Throws 5 TDs as Sierra Vista Crushes Green Valley for 4A Flag Football Title

LAS VEGAS — Amaya Wusstig threw for 378 yards and five touchdowns, leading Sierra Vista to a dominant 44-7 victory over Green Valley in the Class 4A flag football state championship game Thursday at Allegiant Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (19-3) wasted no time establishing control, scoring on a 60-yard screen pass from Wusstig to Yauie Kahawaii Pula on their first drive. Wusstig later connected with Rylei Mazzola for a 57-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, the first of three scoring strikes between the duo.

Green Valley (17-11) briefly cut the deficit to 12-7 early in the second quarter on a Janae Peebles pass to Lyla Baxter, but Sierra Vista answered with two Wusstig touchdown runs to take a 25-7 halftime lead. The junior quarterback added two more touchdown passes in the second half, finding Mazzola and Alyana Amaro to push the lead to 38-7.

The game’s final score came with 3:08 left when a Wusstig pass deflected off multiple players at midfield and landed in Mazzola’s hands, who then sprinted 59 yards for a touchdown. Mazzola finished with five catches for 155 yards.

“We just capitalized on every opportunity,” Sierra Vista coach Daniel Bagwell said. “We had a few mistakes, but every time we had one, somebody was there to make up for it.”

Peebles completed 13 of 29 passes for 179 yards for the Gators, but threw three interceptions. Baxter had three catches for 86 yards.

Bagwell said the program’s first state title was the standard the team set from the start. “It was a lofty goal, but the girls achieved it,” he said.
