Democracy Prep clinches No. 5 seed in 5A state tournament with win over Mojave

Democracy Prep’s boys basketball team secured the No. 5 seed in the Class 5A state tournament by defeating No. 5 Mojave 72-59 on Thursday night at Mojave High School.

Sophomore Jaden Redding led the Blue Knights with 15 points, while Ien Kirkland added 13. Democracy Prep improved to 13-12 overall and 4-4 in the 5A Southern League.

Mojave (16-9, 3-5) will enter the postseason as the No. 6 seed. The Rattlers will travel to No. 3 Coronado for a state quarterfinal on Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Democracy Prep will face No. 4 Desert Pines on the same date and time in another quarterfinal. The other quarterfinal matchups are No. 8 Sierra Vista at No. 1 Liberty and No. 7 Centennial at No. 2 Bishop Gorman, both also at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12.
