The last week of the high school winter sports regular season is here, and playoff positioning is on the line across boys and girls basketball and flag football. With several key games scheduled Monday through Thursday, teams are jockeying for seeds and league titles.
Boys basketball
Class 5A: Liberty (19-5) can secure the No. 1 seed with a home win Monday against Coronado (12-7). A Coronado win would create a three-way tie for the top seed, requiring tiebreakers. Desert Pines (16-7), Mojave (16-7), Centennial and Democracy Prep are competing for seeds 4-7. Sierra Vista holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Arbor View for the final playoff spot.
Class 4A: Clark (14-5), Legacy (17-7) and Las Vegas (18-5) control their own destiny for league titles and No. 1 seeds. Legacy hosts second-place Shadow Ridge, and Las Vegas hosts second-place Rancho on Monday. Foothill (12-11, 5-0) leads the Sky League. The top four teams from each of the four leagues qualify for the 16-team Southern Region tournament; the two region finalists advance to state in Reno.
Class 3A: Virgin Valley (18-6) and The Meadows (17-4) are tied for first place. Tiebreakers could involve league wins by defeated opponents or points allowed. Moapa Valley is expected to secure the sixth and final Southern Region playoff spot.
Girls basketball
Class 5A: Bishop Gorman (18-3) has clinched the No. 1 seed. Democracy Prep (12-6) is likely the No. 2 seed after a 60-59 win at Centennial (15-6) on Friday. Shadow Ridge (10-7), Liberty (15-11), Coronado and Faith Lutheran are battling for seeds 4-7. Legacy will likely take the eighth spot after defeating Desert Pines.
Class 4A: Mojave (18-5), Losee (19-5) and Sierra Vista (18-5) lead their leagues and should earn No. 1 seeds. Foothill (12-9, 5-0) leads the Sky League. No seeds are finalized. The top four teams per league qualify for the 16-team Southern Region tournament; two advance to state in Reno.
Class 3A: Virgin Valley (16-7) has clinched the No. 1 seed, and Coral Academy (16-5) is the No. 2 seed, earning byes to the region semifinals. Boulder City (12-13), Pahrump Valley (12-10) and Moapa Valley (13-8) are tied for third. Cristo Rey, The Meadows and Amplus Academy contend for the last playoff spot.
Flag football
Class 5A: Shadow Ridge (17-1) can lock up the No. 1 seed by beating Arbor View (20-2) on Tuesday and Desert Oasis (17-1) on Thursday. Desert Oasis holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Arbor View. Liberty (12-6) plays Desert Oasis on Tuesday; a win could move the Patriots up from their likely No. 4 seed. Palo Verde, Bishop Gorman (11-6) and SECTA vie for the No. 5 seed. Basic, Foothill and Coronado compete for the final playoff spot.
Class 4A: Sierra Vista (14-2) has clinched the Mountain League’s No. 1 seed, and Spring Valley (14-3) is No. 2. Virgin Valley (12-4) and SLAM! Nevada (14-5) are in prime position for No. 1 seeds. Centennial (8-8, 6-0) has clinched the Desert League title. The top four teams from each of the four leagues qualify for the 16-team state tournament.
