Crawford’s free throws lift Mojave past Shadow Ridge in 64-63 thriller

Mojave’s girls basketball team held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Shadow Ridge to escape with a 64-63 road victory Monday night.

Junior point guard Isabella Crawford scored 30 points, including two clutch free throws with under a minute remaining, to seal the win for the Rattlers (13-4).

Mojave led 54-44 entering the fourth quarter after dominating the first three periods. But Shadow Ridge (5-5) stormed back behind sophomore Alexa Madsen, who had sat out the entire third quarter with foul trouble. Madsen scored four quick points to tie the game at 59 with less than five minutes left, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

With Mojave clinging to a 62-61 lead, Madsen missed two crucial free throws. Crawford was then fouled and calmly sank both shots to make it 64-61. Shadow Ridge’s Kambree Graham hit a layup in the final seconds, but the Mustangs ran out of time.

“Basketball is a game of runs, and Shadow had theirs at the end,” Mojave coach Sequoia Holmes said. “I told my girls to relax, not get frantic, and keep your cool.”

Crawford was the catalyst throughout, scoring 11 points in the second half. Freshman A’yanna Johnson added 11 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Jordyn Carroll contributed 14 points, nine after halftime.

Shadow Ridge senior Jaslyn Jefferson kept the Mustangs close while Madsen sat, scoring 14 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, including two 3-pointers.

Mojave jumped out to a 24-point first quarter behind hot shooting from Crawford and Johnson. The Rattlers led 35-27 at halftime.

“This game is good for our confidence,” Holmes said. “We’re young, and we need to understand how to win.”
