Big City Showdown Showcases Title Contenders in Saturday Basketball

The Big City Showdown at Coronado High School on Saturday brings together several of Nevada’s top Class 5A basketball programs in a seven-game event with direct playoff implications. Starting with Basic versus Las Vegas High at 10:30 a.m., the day features matchups that could shape postseason seeding.

Bishop Gorman vs. Centennial girls, 6:15 p.m.

In a rematch of the last two 5A girls state champions, Bishop Gorman (12-1, 1-0) faces Centennial (8-3, 1-0). Centennial edged Gorman 41-39 last year en route to the state title. Both teams boast legendary coaches: Centennial’s Karen Weitz recently earned her 800th career win, while Gorman’s Sheryl Krmpotich ranks fourth all-time in state wins with 530. The game also features top recruits: Gorman senior guard Aaliah Spaight (committed to Texas) and Centennial four-star forward Nation Williams, the No. 11 class of 2027 prospect.

Coronado vs. Bishop Gorman boys, 8 p.m.

The nightcap pits two-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman (10-7, 1-0) against Coronado (6-6, 1-0) in a rivalry that could preview the state title game. Coronado has won the regular-season meeting each of the past two years, including 62-56 in last year’s Big City Showdown, but has fallen short in the postseason. The Cougars are led by four-star junior guard Munir Greig (15.7 ppg), Missouri State commit Amare Oba (13.3 ppg), and four-star sophomore DeVaughn Dorrough (10.5 ppg, 8.3 rpg). Gorman counters with guard Ty Johnson, forward Kameron Cooper, and forward Tyler Bright.

Desert Pines vs. Liberty boys, 4:30 p.m.

Both teams enter as contenders to challenge Gorman and Coronado. Liberty (12-5, 1-0) is led by three-star senior guard Tyus Thomas (15.4 ppg, 4.2 apg), who returned after a season in Arizona. Desert Pines (11-5, 0-1) features one of the state’s top scorers in sophomore Aaron McMorran (24.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg). The Jaguars reached the state semifinals last year before losing to Gorman.
