The Vegas Golden Knights have found their stride under new coach John Tortorella, winning three straight games to pull within one point of first place in the Pacific Division. They face the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday at Rogers Arena, seeking a fourth consecutive victory.
Tortorella replaced Bruce Cassidy a week ago when the Knights were barely holding a playoff spot. Since then, the team has scored 15 goals in three games, including a 4-2 win over Vancouver in Tortorella’s debut on March 30. That game started slowly—Tortorella said the team was “nervous” in the first period—but the Knights have built momentum.
“I’ve been here a week, and it looks like it’s a pretty open group,” Tortorella said. “I think they enjoy one another. You win some games and you feel good. It always helps.”
Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner have led the offensive surge. Marner recorded his first hat trick with the Knights in a five-point game Thursday, and Eichel had three assists in Saturday’s 5-1 win at Edmonton. Tortorella has rotated wingers on their lines based on feel, a strategy that has kept opponents guessing.
“It’s a lot of fun to play with everybody,” said Ivan Barbashev, who has played with both centers. “Sometimes it’s nice. It’s good for our team, too.”
Tortorella emphasized a direct style—attacking the net with puck and body—rather than east-west plays. “I think they understand where they’re at in the season,” he said. “I think they know how to push one another. I listen to them on the bench. I’m excited to be a part of it.”
The Knights’ recent surge has transformed their playoff outlook. Tuesday’s game at Rogers Arena (7 p.m., KMCC-34) offers a chance to extend the streak and tighten the division race.
