The Meadows boys, Virgin Valley girls capture 3A region basketball crowns

Uzo Nwapa poured in 20 points as top-seeded The Meadows boys basketball team cruised past No. 2 Virgin Valley 73-43 on Saturday at Pahrump Valley to claim the Class 3A Southern Region championship.

Both teams advance to the 3A state tournament, which begins Friday at Fernley High. The Meadows (22-6) will face Spring Creek at 8 p.m., while Virgin Valley (20-5) takes on Northern champion Fernley at 4:40 p.m.

Girls

Hannah Waite scored 34 points in the first half to power No. 1 Virgin Valley past No. 3 Boulder City 70-20 for the 3A girls Southern Region title. The Bulldogs (21-7) meet Fernley at 3 p.m. Friday, and Boulder City (16-14) plays Churchill County at 6:20 p.m.

Class 2A

Boys: Top-seeded Needles (22-3) beat No. 2 Lake Mead Academy 73-57 at Faith Lutheran to win the 2A Southern Region. Needles faces West Wendover at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wooster High in Reno; Lake Mead Academy (15-9) plays Battle Mountain at 5:10 p.m.

Girls: No. 2 Lincoln County (23-4) upset top-seeded Needles 41-37 at Faith Lutheran to win the 2A Southern Region title. Lincoln County plays Oasis Academy at 3:30 p.m. Friday; Needles (15-7) faces Yerington at 6:50 p.m.

Class 1A

Southern League boys: No. 1 Pahranagat Valley (22-5) beat No. 2 Word of Life 64-33 at Sandy Valley. Word of Life (12-6) faces Smith Valley at 5:10 p.m. Thursday at Reno High; Pahranagat Valley plays Mineral County at 8:30 p.m.

Southern League girls: No. 1 Pahranagat Valley (16-8) held off No. 2 Laughlin 38-26 at Sandy Valley. Laughlin (12-3) plays Pyramid Lake at 3 p.m. Thursday; Pahranagat Valley meets Smith Valley at 6:50 p.m.

Central League boys: No. 2 Spring Mountain (13-6) edged No. 1 Tonopah 61-55 at Tonopah. Spring Mountain faces Eureka at 4:40 p.m. Thursday at Spanish Springs; Tonopah (13-7) plays Owyhee at 8 p.m.

Central League girls: No. 1 Round Mountain (20-5) rolled past No. 3 Beatty 66-23 at Tonopah. Round Mountain meets Owyhee at 6:20 p.m. Thursday; Beatty (9-11) plays Eureka at 3 p.m.
