Liberty High’s flag football team extended its winning streak to seven games Friday night, using a dominant second-half performance to beat Bishop Gorman 36-24 on the road. Freshman quarterback Charli Taylor threw for five touchdowns, completing 30 of 39 passes for 284 yards.
The Patriots (10-2, 3-0 Class 5A) trailed 12-8 at halftime after a slow start that included a touchdown-saving interception by Gorman defensive back Sienna Gostanian in the final seconds of the second quarter. But Liberty adjusted after the break, scoring twice in the third quarter on Taylor passes to sophomore wideouts Siaosina Leau and Rocsi Bitanga to take a 22-12 lead.
“We had a rough start with a lot of mistakes, but they settled down in the second half and played Liberty football,” Patriots coach Al Tucay said. “I think the girls played well — they responded.”
Gorman (9-4, 1-2) cut the deficit to 22-18 on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 10-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Avery Reed to senior receiver Preseah Williams. But Liberty answered with two more Taylor touchdown passes — to Leau and senior wideout Aniyah Dela Cruz — to seal the win. The Gaels scored once more with 39 seconds left on a Reed-to-Olivia Cobell connection.
Reed finished 18-for-37 for 272 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. Cobell caught a 53-yard score in the first quarter and another in the final minute. Trishelle Tucay led Liberty receivers with seven catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Since a Dec. 6 loss to Shadow Ridge, Liberty has outscored opponents 293-56 during its winning streak.
