The Class 4A girls Southern Region basketball playoffs tipped off Monday with Del Sol’s Ricana Taylor leading the way. Taylor posted 17 points and 15 rebounds as the Sky League’s second-seeded Dragons (26-4) defeated the Mountain League’s third-seeded Clark Chargers (9-12) 62-50 at Del Sol.
Sabrina Stewart contributed nine points and 16 assists for Del Sol, which advances to face Losee in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
In other girls first-round action, No. 1L Losee routed No. 4D Cimarron-Memorial 69-17 behind Jordynn Riggins’ five 3-pointers and 15 points. No. 1D Mojave beat No. 4L Sunrise Mountain 65-20, and No. 2M Desert Oasis topped No. 3S Basic 69-30 as Alyssa Atkins-Dowd recorded 10 points and 11 steals. No. 1S Foothill defeated No. 4M Spring Valley 72-43, led by Stephanie Ezugha’s 20 points. No. 2L Mater East rolled past No. 3D Palo Verde 65-28 behind Amija Macon’s 28 points. No. 1M Sierra Vista crushed No. 4S Green Valley 72-14, with Donnayja Gibson scoring 21 points. No. 3L Las Vegas upset No. 2D Arbor View 62-52 as Sariyah Johnson tallied 22 points and 23 rebounds.
Boys basketball
In the 4A boys Southern Region playoffs, No. 2M Shadow Ridge beat No. 3S Basic 71-60, and No. 1S Foothill defeated No. 4M Losee 60-48 behind Clinton Ezugha’s 18 points. No. 3D Palo Verde upset No. 2L Rancho 65-53, with Ethan Inocencio scoring 30 points. No. 1M Legacy topped No. 4S Tech 86-60, led by Jordyn Perdue’s 24 points. No. 2D Durango defeated No. 3L Mater East 75-53. No. 1L Las Vegas beat No. 4D Faith Lutheran 75-63, with Amari Hinds scoring 20 points. No. 3M Sky Pointe outlasted No. 2S Green Valley 62-56 in overtime.
Flag football
In 4A flag football state quarterfinals, No. 3S Green Valley stunned No. 1D Centennial 19-18, scoring with a minute left and converting the point-after. Chevelle Jones had three catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns for the Gators, who next face SLAM! Nevada. No. 2S Cadence defeated No. 1L Virgin Valley 12-7 as Leyton Gasperosky passed for 207 yards and a touchdown. No. 1M Sierra Vista beat No. 2D Legacy 35-12, with Yauie Kahawaii-Pula catching two touchdowns and adding a pick-six.
