Clark erupts with 14-0 run to capture 4A Southern Region title over Legacy

HENDERSON — The Clark Chargers knew Legacy would make a push. They just didn’t let it last.

After Legacy trimmed an double-digit lead to eight points early in the fourth quarter, Clark answered with a decisive 14-0 run to secure a 77-62 victory Saturday in the Class 4A Southern Region boys basketball championship at Foothill High School.

Akron signee Devan Christion delivered 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Desert League’s top seed to its third straight win in the region tournament and a berth in the state tournament. The Chargers (20-5) have won 13 consecutive games.

“(Legacy) came out and they gave us a good punch and they went on a little run in the third to cut it,” Clark coach Brent Rothman said. “We just stayed disciplined mentally. We stuck to the game plan and we focused on hitting singles instead of trying to hit home runs.”

Legacy (23-8), the Mountain League’s No. 1 seed, had its 16-game winning streak snapped. The Longhorns will also advance to state as the South’s No. 2 seed.

Amir Wright added 16 points and CJ Edwards scored 14 for Clark, which outscored Legacy 21-11 in the first quarter and led 41-28 at halftime. Christion had 14 points before the break.

Zayden Jeffries led Legacy with 16 points and Jordyn Perdue added 14. The Longhorns cut the deficit to 60-52 on a Jeffries layup with 6:17 left before Clark’s run.

“They looked tired, we were both tired,” Christion said. “It was a battle, so we just took advantage of that. They were just a little slower so we kept pushing and left it all on the court and kept working.”

Both teams will play in the 4A state tournament at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks, beginning with semifinals Friday. Clark is the South’s No. 1 seed; Legacy is No. 2.

“Last year we were the wild card when we went to state, so it’s nice to have the top seed, but the job’s not finished,” Rothman said. “Today was just a good measuring stick. That’s a tough team. They compete. They didn’t quit. They defend at a high level.”

Last season, Clark beat Legacy 88-79 in overtime in the region third-place game to earn the South’s final state berth, then lost to eventual champion Sierra Vista in the state semifinals.

“It feels good,” Christion said. “We weren’t able to get it done last year so it feels good. I want to continue it. This is the first part. We want to get state. That’s the next thing.”
