FISHERS, Ind. — Aaliah Spaight’s high school career ended Thursday with a 72-56 loss to Bullis (Md.) in the first round of the Chipotle Nationals. The Texas signee and McDonald’s All-American finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in her final game for Bishop Gorman.
The Gaels trailed by as many as 32 points before a late rally. Bullis star Ivanna Wilson Manyacka, the No. 2-ranked junior recruit nationally, dominated with 22 points and 21 rebounds. Bullis outrebounded Bishop Gorman 51-31.
Bishop Gorman coach Sheryl Krmpotich kept Spaight on the court until the final two minutes, knowing it was the last time she would coach her. “I just didn’t want to take her out, I’m not going to lie,” Krmpotich said. “I know as a player, you don’t want to come out, but she had been playing the whole game. We did want to give her that little reward of what a great career.”
The Gaels also lost Addysen Carr early to an injury, further depleting their depth. Krmpotich noted rebounding was the difference. “We blocked her out, but we couldn’t clear her and that’s a big difference,” she said.
Spaight capped a remarkable stretch that included a state title last month and the McDonald’s All-American Game earlier this week. Krmpotich praised her impact: “She’s been our heartbeat all year and really the last three years. We’ve kind of gotten on her shoulders.”
