Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn poured in a career-high 33 points as UNLV outlasted Boise State 89-85 in overtime Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. The point guard played all 45 minutes, adding five rebounds and six assists to help the Rebels snap a two-game losing streak.
The game was tight from start to finish, with neither team leading by more than seven points. Boise State forced overtime when forward Drew Fielder hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left in regulation, tying the game at 76-76. UNLV coach Josh Pastner opted not to foul on that possession, citing his team’s struggles with free-throw line box-outs this season. “The worst case scenario is we get five more minutes more of a game in overtime,” Pastner said. “We’ve been good in close games.”
In overtime, Kimani Hamilton sank a jumper with 43 seconds left to give UNLV an 86-84 lead. Tyrin Jones then blocked a shot by Boise State’s Aginaldo Neto with 17 seconds remaining and sealed the win with a dunk. “Players play, but tough players win,” Jones said, borrowing a line from his coach.
Fielder led Boise State with 23 points, and Andrew Meadow added 21. The Broncos (9-8, 1-5 Mountain West) have lost four straight conference games after being picked third in the preseason media poll.
UNLV (8-8, 3-2) outrebounded Boise State 40-33, a notable feat against one of the league’s better rebounding teams. Gibbs-Lawhorn, who has taken over as the lead guard after Myles Che’s foot injury, said, “I’m glad we finally played energized for (an entire game). Shout-out to Coach Pastner, who has helped me get through the ups and downs.”
Pastner arrived at the arena after a flat tire on his way to the game. “I told myself, ‘You have to be at this game,'” he said. “How could I tell the guys to be gritty and tough and their coach wasn’t gritty and tough? I would have just run here.”
