ANAHEIM, Calif. — For weeks, the Golden Knights’ penalty kill looked invincible. On Sunday night, it finally cracked.
The Anaheim Ducks scored two power-play goals — their first two of the series — to beat Vegas 4-3 in Game 4, knotting the second-round series at two games apiece.
Vegas entered the game having killed 21 consecutive penalties dating back to the first round. That streak ended in the first period when Anaheim’s power play finally broke through. The Ducks added another in the second period to take a 3-2 lead.
“It’s been pretty damn good for quite awhile here,” forward Colton Sissons said. “Sometimes bounces will just go that way. It shouldn’t shake our confidence as a whole.”
The loss was compounded by the absence of captain Mark Stone, who missed the game with an injury. The team has not provided any update on his status.
Coach John Tortorella has repeatedly warned that his team needs to stop taking so many penalties, putting the kill unit under constant pressure. On Sunday, that pressure finally produced results for Anaheim.
“You want to stay out of the box,” Tortorella said. “And I just felt like when we did take a penalty, we had some momentum and then we’d take the penalty. And they scored on a couple. We’ve been killing them off, and they scored on a couple. It’s a big part of the game.”
Defenseman Brayden McNabb acknowledged the need for better discipline. “I think we have to be a little more disciplined,” he said. “Took a few, and they got a few. They’re shooting the puck a bit more and getting some bounces around the net. But we know what to do and we have to keep going with how we were doing it and be ready for the next game.”
The Golden Knights will return to T-Mobile Arena for Game 5 on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The series now becomes a best-of-three.
