The Las Vegas Aces rode a historic performance from A’ja Wilson to a 101-94 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, winning their third straight game and 10th consecutive meeting against Connecticut.
Wilson scored a season-high 45 points on 15-of-18 shooting, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range and a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line. The four-time MVP also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
“I feel great,” Wilson said. “When you’re able to find shots within our system and just let the flow of the game take over, that’s big for me. I’m going to be efficient. It’s beautiful to rack up all these points and ‘Oh my gosh,’ but are they going to be efficient. That’s key for me. That’s the numbers I look at. If I’m able to do that, I know I’m going to be OK.”
Wilson’s outburst came after three solid but unspectacular games to open the season. Aces coach Becky Hammon said the team made a concerted effort to get Wilson early touches.
“She was unbelievable,” Hammon said. “I thought she got a lot of early touches to get her going and then we were just kind of riding her from there.”
A key sequence came late in the third quarter when Connecticut had cut a double-digit lead to two points with an 11-0 run. Wilson responded with a 3-pointer and a three-point play to push the lead back to eight entering the fourth.
“My teammates trust me in that situation,” Wilson said.
Chennedy Carter added 18 points, and Chelsea Gray posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists, plus seven rebounds. Gray, who has seen Wilson’s greatness up close for years, said she never tires of it.
“You can’t get bored with watching greatness,” Gray said. “I’m around it all the time, but I’m surprised every day. I don’t ever want to get to the spot where I’m just comfortable with that.”
Hailey Van Lith led the Sun with 17 points as Connecticut fell to 0-4. The Aces (3-1) wrap up their four-game road trip Sunday in Atlanta.
