Mark Stone scored twice for the first time since Feb. 5, but the Vegas Golden Knights could not secure the second point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday at T-Mobile Arena. Evan Bouchard’s slot shot with 1:50 left in the extra period decided the game, moments after Vegas failed to convert a 4-on-3 power play.
The Golden Knights (32-26-15) earned one point but remain in third place in the Pacific Division, two points behind the Oilers (36-28-9) with nine games remaining. Their lead over fourth-place Los Angeles, which beat Vancouver 4-0, is three points. The Kings trail Nashville by one point for the second Western Conference wild card.
Stone tied the game 1-1 at 4:09 of the first period on a backhand rebound. Edmonton captain Connor McDavid answered 3:18 later to restore the lead. Stone struck again at 14:51, forcing a turnover on McDavid and finishing with another backhand. Zach Hyman responded 1:51 later after a turnover by defenseman Brayden McNabb. Ivan Barbashev tied it 6:21 into the third on a rebound of Pavel Dorofeyev’s shot.
Adin Hill made 25 saves for Vegas. McDavid had a goal and two assists, reaching 800 career assists. The Oilers have won three of three meetings this season and nine of the past 10 overall, including last postseason’s second-round series in five games. The teams meet again April 4 at Rogers Place.
Vegas went 0-for-3 on the power play, generating seven shots but only one from inside 25 feet. Hyman was called for holding Stone 1:02 into overtime, but the Knights could not capitalize. McDavid won the ensuing faceoff, and Bouchard beat Hill stick side from the slot.
