The Vegas Golden Knights waited out a 25-minute delay between the second and third periods Thursday night, then erupted for three goals in the final frame to beat the Calgary Flames 6-3 at T-Mobile Arena.
A zamboni created a hole in the ice near the City of Las Vegas decal during the second intermission, forcing the ice crew to repair the surface with fire extinguishers and hammers. Captains Mark Stone and Mikael Backlund, along with the referees, inspected the repair before play resumed.
“We were actually getting ready to go out, and then they pulled us back in,” winger Brett Howden said.
While the crew worked, DJ Joe Green played EDM music, and players waited in their locker rooms. “It was tough, to be honest. We didn’t know what was going on,” said Mitch Marner, who completed his first hat trick as a Knight with 1:29 left in the game.
Goaltender Carter Hart, making his first start in nearly three months, finished with 19 saves. “Just staying in it mentally. Meditated a little bit, just staying warm, staying ready for the next puck,” Hart said.
The Knights improved to 2-0 under coach John Tortorella, who said of the delay: “We just waited it out.”
Howden broke a 3-3 tie at 7:40 of the third period, and Ivan Barbashev added an insurance goal 2:39 later. The Knights scored on three of their six shots in the period.
“You get to that third period, you have a delay like you did, it’s a find-a-way league,” Tortorella said. “You just got to find a way to win a period.”
The win capped a 2-0-2 homestand for Vegas, which now heads on a four-game road trip.
