Ava Koenig of Palo Verde has been voted the Las Vegas Review-Journal Girls Prep Athlete of the Week for performances during March 23-28. The senior pitcher/utility player secured 369 of 487 total votes, good for 75.8 percent.
Koenig, a Boston University commit and reigning 5A Mountain League Pitcher of the Year, threw a complete-game one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Doral Academy. She has not allowed an earned run this season in 31.1 innings and is batting .500 through 24 plate appearances.
The other nominees were Ciana Beals of Mojave track and Gwen Thewes of Bishop Gorman softball. Beals, a junior, won the 400-meter event in 56.36 seconds at the Las Vegas Track Classic, the state’s top time this season. Thewes, a junior outfielder, went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs to help the Gaels overcome a six-run deficit in an 8-6 victory over Green Valley. She leads the team with a .513 batting average.
Voting closed at noon Thursday. The weekly poll featured three players with standout performances.
