WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics’ offense came alive Friday night, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits to defeat the Houston Astros 11-4 in front of a fired-up home opener crowd at Sutter Health Park. Lawrence Butler and Max Muncy each homered and combined for six RBIs, powering the A’s to their second win of the season.
The decisive blow came in the fourth inning. With the A’s leading 5-3, Butler launched a three-run homer off reliever Bryan King, and Muncy followed with a solo shot to make it 9-3. The six-run frame also featured a two-run double by Muncy earlier and a popup by Tyler Soderstrom that fell in no-man’s land along the first-base line, scoring another run.
Muncy finished 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, and three RBIs. Butler went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. The A’s had scored only 17 runs in their first six games before breaking out Friday, and all of their runs came with two outs.
Jeffrey Springs (1-0) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. Cristian Javier (0-1) took the loss, lasting just 3 2/3 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits.
The Astros (5-3) had won five straight after dropping their first two games, but fell behind early. Yordan Álvarez hit a sacrifice fly in the third, and Jose Altuve had a run-scoring single in the fifth, but Houston could not overcome the A’s outburst.
Jacob Wilson contributed an RBI single in the fourth, and Denzel Clarke drove in a run with a single in the second. The A’s improved to 2-5 on the season, while the Astros dropped to 5-3.
The Athletics are scheduled to move to Las Vegas in 2028, playing at Sutter Health Park through next season.
Up next: RHP Tatsuya Imai (0-0, 13.50 ERA) starts for the Astros on Saturday against A’s RHP Luis Morales (0-1, 10.38).
