The Vegas Golden Knights fired 62 shots at the Buffalo Sabres net Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena, but 20 missed the target entirely in a 2-0 loss to the Eastern Conference leaders.
Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped all 28 shots he faced to earn the shutout, while the Knights’ offensive frustration mounted as pucks sailed wide or clanged off iron.
“Hit the net, make the goalie make a save,” coach Bruce Cassidy said.
Defenseman Rasmus Andersson accounted for five of the missed shots, and 11 different Knights were charged with a missed chance. Forward Mitch Marner hit the crossbar with 5:02 remaining in the third period.
“I think one of the things we’ll look at tomorrow is finding a way to get pucks through from the top a little better,” Marner said. “Finding ways we can get screens and tips a little better. I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight.”
Goaltender Adin Hill made 23 saves in his fifth straight start but was beaten late in the first period when he misplayed the puck near the trapezoid, leading to Josh Doan’s goal. Hill has allowed only eight goals over his five-start stretch.
The Knights (31-23-14) have lost seven of 11 games since the Olympic break and now sit third in the Pacific Division. They scored just three goals combined in their three losses during Hill’s recent run.
“Obviously, we have to bury more,” center Tomas Hertl said. “We played a good hockey game. We just couldn’t finish. It was a close game. You can’t win a game when you don’t score a goal, so it’s tough but I thought it was a good game from us.”
According to Natural Stat Trick, the Knights held 51 percent of the expected goal shares. Cassidy praised the forecheck and four-line rotation but emphasized the need to finish.
“Offensively, the numbers are going to look great, yet it’s a goose egg,” Cassidy said. “There’s no consolation in that. We need to finish more.”
The Knights can still salvage a successful homestand when they host the Utah Mammoth on Thursday at 7 p.m.
