Eichel’s OT Backhand Caps Golden Knights’ Comeback Win Over Maple Leafs

Eichel’s OT Backhand Caps Golden Knights’ Comeback Win Over Maple Leafs

Jack Eichel’s backhand goal 2:13 into overtime gave the Vegas Golden Knights a 6-5 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night at T-Mobile Arena, completing a comeback that included a game-tying goal with seven seconds left in regulation.

Eichel’s winner came after the Knights forced a turnover in the offensive zone. The goal was his second straight overtime winner, following a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils 24 hours earlier.

“You never know,” coach Bruce Cassidy said. “It depends how the rest of (the season) goes, but I certainly think it’s got the ability that guys can look back and draw (experience) on.”

The Knights trailed 3-1 after the first period and 5-3 in the third. They have won eight games this season after trailing in the third period, matching the franchise’s second-highest total in a season (11 in 2017-18 and 2022-23).

Mitch Marner, playing his first game against his former team since signing with Vegas as a free agent, recorded two primary assists on Pavel Dorofeyev’s power-play goals. Marner was booed loudly by the Toronto fan contingent every time he touched the puck.

“We got a resilient group,” Marner said. “We stay in the fight regardless of the score of the game and the time of the game.”

Dorofeyev’s third goal of the night was called back for offsides, denying him a hat trick. Tomas Hertl’s goal with seven seconds left in regulation tied the game at 5-5. It was the second-latest game-tying goal in franchise history, behind Max Pacioretty’s buzzer-beater on Nov. 27, 2019.

Mark Stone extended his point streak to 10 games with a goal, becoming the third player in franchise history to reach that mark, joining Eichel (12 games, 2023-24) and Hertl (11 games, 2024-25).

Adin Hill made 23 saves in his first start since Oct. 20 after missing three months with a lower-body injury. He allowed three goals in the first period, one on the power play in the second, and one on a two-on-one in the third. Hill’s scorpion save on Bobby McCann in the first period kept the deficit at 3-1.

“It wasn’t an easy start for Adin,” Cassidy said.

Marner will make his first return to Toronto as a visitor on Jan. 23.
