The Nevada high school winter sports postseason concluded Saturday with state championships across multiple classifications. The biggest surprise came in Class 5A boys basketball, where No. 3 Coronado defeated No. 1 Liberty 60-55 on Friday, Feb. 20 at Valley High to win the state title.
Coronado had earlier beaten No. 2 Bishop Gorman 76-55 in the semifinals, while Liberty advanced with a 61-50 win over No. 5 Democracy Prep. Liberty had entered the tournament as the top seed after a 84-56 quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Sierra Vista.
In the girls 5A final, top-seeded Bishop Gorman outlasted No. 2 Democracy Prep 79-76 in double overtime on Friday at Valley High. The Gaels dominated their earlier rounds, beating No. 8 Legacy 81-12 and No. 4 Coronado 70-12.
In Class 4A, Clark swept the boys and girls titles. The boys team, seeded No. 1 from the Desert league, beat No. 1 North Bishop Manogue 56-54 in the state championship Saturday at Spanish Springs. Earlier, Clark had won the Southern Region title with a 77-62 victory over Legacy. The girls 4A title went to No. 1 South Losee, which defeated No. 1 North Reno High 41-36 on Saturday at Spanish Springs.
Class 3A saw The Meadows boys claim a 59-52 state championship win over Fernley on Saturday at Fernley High, while Churchill County girls beat Virgin Valley 65-51.
In Class 2A, Battle Mountain boys edged Needles 70-67, and Lincoln County girls defeated Yerington 43-41.
Class 1A titles went to Smith Valley boys (72-59 over Mineral County) and Pyramid Lake girls (44-31 over Eureka).
In flag football, Shadow Ridge won the 5A state championship with a 12-0 shutout of Bishop Gorman on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Allegiant Stadium. Sierra Vista captured the 4A flag football title with a 44-7 victory over Green Valley.
