CORALVILLE, Iowa — Bella Mir added another championship to her growing collection Saturday, winning the 145-pound national title at the inaugural NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships.
The North Central College senior and daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir pinned top-seeded Reese Larramendy of Iowa in the first period at Xtream Arena. The victory avenged Mir’s only loss of the season, which came against Larramendy.
Mir, a former Centennial High School standout who won four state titles in Nevada, finished second nationally last year before capturing the crown this time around.
“When you have fans and teammates like that, how do I lose?” Mir said after the match. “That’s my biggest support system along with my family and my parents.”
The 23-year-old began her collegiate career at Iowa before transferring to North Central after injuries prompted a fresh start. She is also undefeated in four professional MMA fights and holds a high level in jiu-jitsu. Mir went to college on the first name, image and likeness deal the UFC ever did with an athlete.
After her victory, Mir and her father embraced in tears before she celebrated with her teammates. While a UFC deal awaits, Mir is likely to remain on the regional circuit as she continues wrestling, with a possible run at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. She did hint at a return to MMA soon: “I think we’re going to go have a fight, baby,” she said, laughing.
