BALTIMORE — The Athletics saw their three-game winning streak halted Sunday as the Baltimore Orioles escaped a sweep with a 2-1 victory at Camden Yards. Chris Bassitt tossed six innings of one-run relief and Leody Taveras gunned down the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh inning.
The Orioles pulled a pregame surprise, sending left-hander Keegan Akin to start instead of Bassitt. Akin struck out two in a perfect first inning before giving way to Bassitt (3-2), who allowed just one run over six frames.
Carlos Cortes put the A’s ahead in the second with a sacrifice fly. But Gunnar Henderson tied the game in the third with an infield single. Baltimore took the lead for good in the sixth when Samuel Basallo doubled, moved to third on Taveras’ single, and scored on Dylan Beavers’ nine-pitch at-bat single to left field.
The A’s threatened in the seventh when Zack Gelof singled to center with a runner on second. Taveras’ throw beat Cortes to the plate in a collision, preserving the Orioles’ lead.
Luis Severino (2-4) was charged with two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Baltimore left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth but capitalized in the latter frame. Anthony Nunez walked two in the eighth but struck out Brent Rooker and got Tyler Soderstrom on a flyout. Rico Garcia worked a hitless ninth for his third save.
Despite the loss, the A’s remain two games ahead of Seattle atop the AL West. The club is scheduled to relocate to Las Vegas in 2028.
Orioles infield coach Miguel Cairo was ejected in the third inning. A’s shortstop Jacob Wilson exited in the fifth with a shoulder injury.
The A’s are off Monday before sending Jeffrey Springs (3-2) to the mound Tuesday night at home against St. Louis.
