SALT LAKE CITY — With the season on the line, John Tortorella shortened his bench in the third period and overtime of Game 4, keeping Pavel Dorofeyev and Tomas Hertl — two of the Vegas Golden Knights’ top goal scorers — mostly glued to it.
Dorofeyev did not play the final 13:16 of regulation. Hertl went five minutes between shifts in the third period. Both finished with eight shifts in the third and overtime, and Dorofeyev’s overtime goal was waved off due to an offside entry by Jack Eichel.
“As the game goes on, I call them as I see them,” Tortorella said. “Two very important people for us, but as the game’s being played — and that’s a very important game for us in a Game 4 — I’m just going to call them as I see them as to who gets that ice time.”
Dorofeyev opened the scoring 1:12 into the game, but his turnover led to Utah’s first goal. Twenty-nine seconds later, Hertl’s line allowed Ian Cole’s goal that cut Vegas’s lead to 3-2. Dorofeyev played 19 shifts and skated 18:07; Hertl had 18 shifts and 11:39 of ice time.
Hertl has not scored since March 4. He had one shot on goal and one shot attempt at 5-on-5 in Game 4, according to Natural Stat Trick. He was also bumped off the top power-play unit in favor of Ivan Barbashev.
“Everybody looks at stuff because everybody expect it from me to score, and they’re just looking at the score sheet,” Hertl said. “It’s tough, but I just have to find a way. Even if I don’t score, I have to help another way.”
Tortorella, who took over on March 29, declined to single out players. “I thought the lines were good,” he said. “Changed it up in certain situations, but I thought everybody contributed. I thought we played as a team.”
The series is tied 2-2. Game 5 is Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena at 7 p.m. on TNT.
