Raiders add Cal DB Hezekiah Masses with fifth-round pick

The Las Vegas Raiders continued their secondary overhaul Saturday, selecting California cornerback Hezekiah Masses in the fifth round. Masses becomes the fourth defensive back chosen by general manager John Spytek in the team’s first eight picks.

Masses, a Florida native, began his college career at Florida International, where he played three seasons before transferring to Cal for his final year. He brings a wealth of starting experience and is expected to contribute immediately on special teams.

Raiders beat writer Adam Hill graded the pick a B, noting that Masses fits well in the zone-heavy scheme new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard plans to implement. “His anticipation is fantastic and he has the speed to break on the ball,” Hill wrote.

However, Masses’ lack of size is a concern in run support, where he can be a liability. He may also serve as insurance for earlier pick Jermod McCoy, who is recovering from an injury.
