Golden Knights Part Ways with Bruce Cassidy, Hire John Tortorella as Head Coach

The Vegas Golden Knights made a stunning move Sunday, firing head coach Bruce Cassidy with just eight games left in the regular season and naming John Tortorella as his replacement. The 67-year-old Tortorella, who has 23 seasons of NHL coaching experience, becomes the fourth coach in franchise history.

General manager Kelly McCrimmon announced the change in a statement, thanking Cassidy for his four seasons of service and for leading the team to the 2023 Stanley Cup championship. “We believe that a change is necessary for us to return to the level of play that is expected of our club,” McCrimmon said. McCrimmon is scheduled to address the media Monday.

The timing of the decision is remarkable. The Knights currently hold third place in the Pacific Division, three points behind the Edmonton Oilers, and are in a playoff spot. However, the team has been sliding, posting a 5-10-2 record since the Winter Olympic break and losing six of their last seven games, including a 5-4 shootout defeat to the Washington Capitals on Saturday.

Cassidy, 60, had one year remaining on a five-year contract signed in June 2022. He compiled a franchise-record 178 wins in 320 regular-season games and a 24-16 playoff record, culminating in the Cup victory in his first season. The Knights also won the Pacific Division twice under Cassidy, but fell short in the playoffs the past two years, including a second-round exit to the Oilers last season.

Tortorella, a two-time Jack Adams Award winner, last coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 2022 to 2025, where he went 97-107-33 and missed the playoffs each season. He spent this season as an ESPN analyst. Tortorella led the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup in 2004 and has reached the postseason 12 times in his career, including a historic sweep of the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Lightning while coaching the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2019.

The Knights host the Vancouver Canucks on Monday at T-Mobile Arena. The game will be broadcast on KMCC-34 at 7 p.m.
