Tortorella takes over Golden Knights after Cassidy firing

The Vegas Golden Knights have a new bench boss. John Tortorella, a Stanley Cup champion and the winningest American-born coach in NHL history, was hired Sunday to replace Bruce Cassidy.

Cassidy led the Golden Knights to their first Stanley Cup title in 2023 but was dismissed after the team missed the playoffs this spring. Tortorella becomes the fourth head coach in franchise history.

With 770 career wins, Tortorella ranks ninth on the NHL’s all-time list, 12 shy of Al Arbour. He is a two-time Jack Adams Award winner and recently served as an assistant coach for Team USA’s gold medal run at the Olympics.

But his resume also includes four league suspensions and a reputation for volatile behavior. In 2014, he was suspended 15 days for attempting to enter the Calgary Flames’ locker room during an intermission. He has been fined multiple times for criticizing officials, including $50,000 and a two-game suspension two years ago for berating referees after a game.

Tortorella has been hired and fired by five NHL clubs. He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004 but also endured three first-round exits in four seasons with Columbus. His only stint with a clear No. 1 goaltender came with the New York Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist; in other stops he rotated netminders, notably sitting Roberto Luongo in the 2014 Heritage Classic.

Known for fiery news conferences, Tortorella often calls out players publicly. His practices are said to be tough and schedules unpredictable, a contrast to Cassidy’s player-friendly approach. He also has a history of clashing with the media, sometimes belittling reporters for their questions.

How his style meshes with a Golden Knights roster that includes goalie Adin Hill remains to be seen.
