The Toronto Blue Jays capped a dominant season-opening series by striking out 50 Athletics batters over three games, a major league record for most strikeouts by a team in its first three games, after a 5-2 victory Sunday at Rogers Centre.
George Springer led off the first inning with the 64th leadoff home run of his career, and Kazuma Okamoto hit his first major league homer, a solo shot in the second. Jesús Sánchez added a two-run homer in the third, his first with Toronto.
Max Muncy hit a two-run home run for the Athletics, who managed only five hits. The A’s, who plan to move to Las Vegas in 2028, were swept in the three-game set.
Blue Jays starter Eric Lauer (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits over 5⅓ innings, walking one and striking out nine. Jeff Hoffman pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save, bouncing back after blowing the save Friday on a game-tying homer by Shea Langeliers.
The 50 strikeouts also matched the Blue Jays’ franchise record for a single series. Toronto, the defending American League champions, swept 11 series last season.
