The Vegas Golden Knights outshot the Dallas Stars 25-16 on Tuesday night, yet still lost 2-1 at American Airlines Center, extending their skid to six losses in seven games.
Jack Eichel opened the scoring 1:31 into the second period, but the Stars answered with a rebound goal from Oskar Back at 10:41 and a power-play deflection by captain Jamie Benn at 14:16. Benn’s goal proved to be the winner.
“We didn’t execute offensively great tonight overall,” coach Bruce Cassidy said.
Adin Hill made 14 saves, but the Knights’ offense has dried up since the Olympic break, scoring two or fewer goals in each of the six losses. Despite controlling play at 5-on-5 with a 20-13 edge in shots and a 44-26 advantage in shot attempts, Dallas held a 7-5 edge in high-danger chances and a 1.75-1.2 edge in expected goals, per Natural Stat Trick.
“You get greasy goals by putting pucks on net and that’s what opens up other plays at times,” Cassidy said. “We’re trying to make the pretty plays first instead of getting it to the net, recover a puck, break them down, then make your pretty play.”
Defenseman Brayden McNabb led the team with five shots on goal, highlighting the lack of forward presence near the crease. The Knights went 0-for-3 on the power play and did not register a shot attempt on their final man advantage.
“I would like to see us execute better against their high pressure,” Cassidy said. “It seemed we couldn’t get away from it, where other times in the past we were able to get out of those traps up high.”
The Stars (40-14-10) extended their point streak to 13 games (12-0-1) and kept pace with Colorado in the Central Division. The Knights (29-22-14) fell three points behind Anaheim for first in the Pacific Division.
“It’s hard for our group right now,” defenseman Jeremy Lauzon said. “We’re a veteran group here. There’s a lot of experience in that room, and we’re going to turn the corner here.”
