Akira Schmid may have made the save of the tournament, but even that couldn’t slow down Canada’s relentless attack. The Golden Knights goaltender stopped 34 of 39 shots, including a spectacular scorpion save on Sidney Crosby during a breakaway, but Canada prevailed 5-1 on Friday in Milan.
Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon each recorded a goal and two assists, while 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini scored for the second consecutive game. Canada clinched Group A and earned a bye to the quarterfinals.
Schmid started the second game of a back-to-back after Leonardo Genoni posted a 27-save shutout against France. Schmid faced 27 shots through two periods but kept Switzerland within striking distance until Canada’s stars broke through in the third.
Mitch Marner, a Knights winger, assisted on Crosby’s goal at 7:28 of the third period to make it 4-1, marking Marner’s second straight game with an assist. Knights captain Mark Stone played 16:58 with two shots and a plus-1 rating, while defenseman Shea Theodore logged 17:00 on the second pairing with Colton Parayko. Former Knights goalie Logan Thompson made 24 saves for his first Olympic win.
