John Spytek stood at the podium Monday and used the word “meticulous” repeatedly. That word will define the Las Vegas Raiders’ path forward after firing head coach Pete Carroll following a 3-14 season.
The Raiders own the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL draft and need a franchise quarterback. But Spytek, the general manager, and minority owner Tom Brady are not promising a quick fix.
“We didn’t perform well enough. We didn’t play well enough. We didn’t do the right things consistent enough to win games. You are what you are. We were 3-14. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Spytek said.
The decision to move on from Carroll came Monday after the Raiders beat New England in Week 1 and then regressed. The franchise has now cycled through multiple coaches in recent years, and this search will be led by Spytek and Brady, who the team said will have a major say in football operations.
“We’re looking for someone to build this the right way and not to think we’ve got to produce 10 wins or whatever next year,” Spytek said. “Whoever the best coach is for the Raiders is who we’re going to hire. We want a meticulous build that will set us up for years of success in the future.”
Spytek declined to say whether star defensive end Maxx Crosby is untouchable in trade talks, hinting that everything is on the table for a roster that needs a serious overhaul.
“We’re in constant communication daily whether (Brady) is in the building or not,” Spytek said. “He trusts me. We tell each other the truth. … I’m not afraid to tell him what I think.”
The Raiders have the draft capital to accelerate the rebuild, but Spytek emphasized that progress must be visible, even if it takes time. “We have a great opportunity to do that,” he said.
