Dolphins poach Raiders rookie QB Cam Miller from practice squad

The Miami Dolphins have signed rookie quarterback Cam Miller off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad, the team announced Thursday. Miller, a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft out of North Dakota State, spent the entire season on the Raiders’ practice squad before being poached.

The 24-year-old quarterback decided to accept the opportunity rather than remain with the Raiders, a choice that could lead to a more direct path to playing time. Miami’s quarterback room is unsettled: Tua Tagovailoa is not expected back next season, Zach Wilson is a free agent, and Quinn Ewers is under contract. That leaves Miller potentially competing with Ewers for a roster spot next year.

Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith said the team had been tracking Miller since the draft. “We liked him coming out of the draft,” Smith told reporters Thursday. “He showed great anticipation, conviction, toughness. He had a really good understanding of their offense, had really good timing and rhythm.”

“He was a guy that we came out of the draft process that we really liked, and we’re glad it kinda worked out,” Smith added.

For the Raiders, losing Miller stings as they face an offseason of turnover at quarterback. Geno Smith is likely to be released after a disappointing season, and backup Kenny Pickett will be a free agent. Only Aidan O’Connell is under contract for 2026. The Raiders (2-14) hold either the first or second pick in the 2026 draft and are expected to select a quarterback.

Raiders quarterbacks coach Greg Olson expressed disappointment at the loss. “Yeah, disappointing to lose him because we put a lot of time in, and he’s put a lot of time in here as well,” Olson said. “I had a chance talk to him last night before he got on the plane and left, but he’s a hard worker and certainly somebody that we valued here, and it’s hard to lose a guy like that late in the season. But good luck to him, and happy for him.”

Olson praised Miller’s intellect and accuracy, noting that “the game’s not too big for him.” Miller led North Dakota State to FCS national championships in 2021 and 2024 and holds school records in completions (759), passing yards (9,721), total offense (11,998) and completion percentage (.694).
