The Raiders have another option at quarterback.
Aidan O’Connell, who broke his right wrist during a preseason game, has been practicing with the team for the last three weeks and is now eligible to play in a game after he was activated from injured reserve Wednesday.
“It’s super exciting,” O’Connell said before Wednesday’s indoor practice at the team facility. “Obviously, I’ve been able to practice over the last few weeks and that was a big milestone too, just getting out there with the guys. Now, I’m just excited to be back on the squad.”
It’s not clear whether O’Connell will replace Kenny Pickett as the Raiders’ backup quarterback.
O’Connell said his main focus will be working with Smith, Pickett and rookie practice squad quarterback Cam Miller to make sure everyone is as prepared as possible on game day.
“Whatever they ask me to do, I’m going to do,” O’Connell said. “I’ve tried to stay involved, so I’ll continue doing that and continue to communicate with the quarterbacks and the offense where my two cents is welcomed, while not trying to have too many cooks in the kitchen at the same time.”
O’Connell feels his arm is at full strength after his rehab process. He’s eager to contribute however he can.
“Any injury is hard and we play a game with a 100 percent injury rate,” O’Connell said. “But it gives you time to reflect and understand how important the game is to me and how much I love it. I do miss it when I don’t get to play.”
O’Connell gives the Raiders (2-8) another experienced option behind Smith.
The 2023 fourth-round pick out of Purdue appeared in 20 games his first two seasons and threw for 3,830 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He hopes he can help the team finish the year on a positive note.
“I think any time the game is taken away, it’s hard,” O’Connell said. “I’ve tried my best to be encouraging and supportive.
“Not as many wins as we were hoping, but it just takes one week to turn it around.”
Injury report
The Raiders are as healthy as they have been all season.
The team had just one player listed on Wednesday’s injury report, though offensive linemen Kolton Miller and Jackson Powers-Johnson remain on injured reserve with ankle injuries. Defensive lineman Jonah Laulu was limited with a rib injury.
The Browns, the Raiders’ opponent Sunday, had 10 players listed on their injury report. Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel missed Wednesday’s practice with a concussion and has already been declared out. Rookie Shedeur Sanders will start in Gabriel’s stead.
Tight end David Njoku, who has 30 catches for 288 yards and three touchdowns this season, also missed practice Wednesday with a knee injury.
Speed it up
The Raiders’ offensive line issues have been well documented this season. Things won’t get easier this week when the team faces Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett, who has an NFL-leading 15 sacks, without Miller and Powers-Johnson.
Smith said there are things he can do to help his offensive line find more success.
“Get the ball out,” he said. “That’s a big part of it is just getting the ball out. Hitting my back foot and getting that ball out fast so they don’t have a chance to work their moves. And that’s something that we’ll build into, try to build into the game plan, but the main thing is that we execute. We’ve got to block them. There’s no way around it. You’ve got to block the guy, and I’ve got to get the ball out so I can help those guys.
“We’ve got to execute a lot better than we have, but there’s no escaping the hardships of playing football. I mean, it is what it is, so we’ve all just got to do a better job.”
