John Tortorella has been the Vegas Golden Knights’ head coach for exactly one month as of Wednesday, and the learning curve extends beyond the players. The veteran coach, known for his blunt and brief media interactions, has brought a distinct style to the podium that contrasts sharply with predecessor Bruce Cassidy.
During Wednesday’s morning skate press conference, Tortorella’s session lasted roughly two minutes and 20 seconds, with about 45 seconds spent passing the microphone. His responses were characteristically terse: when asked about the power play, he answered simply, “Nope.” Asked about Utah Mammoth’s push in Game 4, he said, “I’ll always look at the other team, but more concentrated on our team.”
The 20-year coaching veteran has made it clear he prefers minimal interaction before game days, particularly around the 10:45 a.m. skate time. Players are also adjusting to the new voice behind the bench after three-plus years under Cassidy, with notable instances like the benching of Pavel Dorofeyev and Tomas Hertl late in Game 4 on Monday.
“That’s Playoff Torts,” one observer noted. “Nothing wrong with that.” The media, too, is learning the nuances of a coach who doesn’t mince words or waste time, a reputation built over decades. No disrespect has been shown, but the adjustment is ongoing for everyone involved.
