Palo Verde senior Kyle Johnson scattered two hits over 6.2 innings Wednesday as the Panthers defeated Sierra Vista 7-2 in a tournament game. Johnson’s performance headlined a busy day of high school baseball, softball and boys volleyball action across Southern Nevada.
In other baseball tournament action, Silverado’s Giovanni Guariglia powered the Skyhawks with two home runs and four RBIs in a 14-10 victory over The Meadows. Liberty’s Shawn Mack homered and doubled to help the Patriots edge Shadow Ridge 10-9. Desert Oasis junior Ryan Roshak went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs as the Diamondbacks beat Rancho 9-1. Mater East freshman Guillermo Negron drove in three runs with two doubles in an 11-1 win over Eldorado. Foothill junior Guillano Pugliese went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in a 21-1 rout of Cimarron-Memorial.
On the softball diamond, Foothill sophomore Leah Henderson struck out 13 and pitched a complete-game three-hitter in an 8-0 win over Boulder City. Spring Valley senior Aubree Holcombe went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs as the Grizzlies beat Cheyenne 13-3 in six innings. Legacy freshman Audrie McClerkin tossed a three-inning no-hitter in a 17-0 win over Eldorado. Bonanza sophomore Xochi Mendoza tripled and drove in three runs in a 22-17 slugfest win over Durango. Cimarron-Memorial junior Jasmine Ponce hit for the cycle and had six RBIs in a 24-5 victory over Rancho.
In boys volleyball, Palo Verde junior Andrew Gutierrez recorded 14 kills in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 sweep of Mojave. Virgin Valley junior Jayzin Broderick contributed seven kills, six digs and three aces in a three-set win over Hurricane (Utah). Liberty defeated Las Vegas 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 despite 10 assists from Wildcats senior Isaac Suarez.
