Henderson mayor Michelle Romero and Basic Academy principal Tati Hadavi cut the ribbon on the baseball team’s newly-turfed field Tuesday, kicking off a double celebration: the Wolves received their 2025 5A state championship rings before dismantling Coronado 10-0 in six innings.
Basic (3-1, 1-0 Class 5A Desert League) erupted for seven runs in the second inning, putting the game out of reach. Saint Mary’s (California) commit Johnny Villarreal tossed five shutout innings, striking out six to earn the win. Texas A&M commit Matthew Kelley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Coronado (5-3, 0-1) managed just one hit against Villarreal and reliever Gabe Giron. The game ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The two teams will meet again at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Basic, as renovations continue at Coronado’s field.
