Reilly Smith scored twice and Mark Stone extended his goal streak to six games as the Vegas Golden Knights rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 on Thursday night at T-Mobile Arena.
The victory, Vegas’s second straight comeback win, improved the Knights to 19-11-12. But the win was overshadowed by an apparent left leg injury to starting goaltender Carter Hart in the first period.
Hart went down during a scramble in front of the net and was unable to stop Boone Jenner’s goal. He stayed on the ice in pain for nearly 30 seconds before trainers helped him off. Akira Schmid entered in relief and made 19 saves.
“It’s really hard to see (Hart) go down,” Jack Eichel said. “I know how hard he’s worked and what he’s put in to come back here and play with us.”
Coach Bruce Cassidy said Hart will undergo a full evaluation Friday morning. “The way he came off didn’t look good, but we’ll see,” Cassidy said.
After falling behind 2-0 on goals by Jenner and Kent Johnson, the Knights responded with four unanswered goals. Smith tied the game in the second period, and Mark Stone put Vegas ahead with a power-play goal 16 seconds into a man-advantage late in the second. Smith added his second of the night on a delayed penalty, and Eichel also scored.
“Our second and third (periods) have been really good the last two games,” Mitch Marner said. “We just have to try to bring that to the first.”
Kirill Marchenko pulled Columbus within 4-3 with 5:32 remaining, but Brett Howden answered 1:46 later on a 2-on-1 with Keegan Kolesar.
The Knights also received positive news on the injury front as defenseman Shea Theodore (upper body) and goaltender Adin Hill (lower body) skated in the morning skate. Neither played Thursday, but Cassidy said they are “getting closer” to returning.
