Raiders Clear Rooney Rule, Free to Hire Head Coach

The Las Vegas Raiders have completed the necessary steps to hire a new head coach at any time. Owner Mark Davis and general manager John Spytek conducted in-person interviews with former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero while in south Florida, satisfying the NFL’s Rooney Rule requirements.

The Rooney Rule, first implemented in 2003 and revised multiple times, mandates that teams interview at least two minority candidates in person for head coaching vacancies. The rule aims to promote diversity in leadership roles across the league.

In addition to McDaniel and Evero, the Raiders held virtual interviews with two other minority candidates: Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Rams passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase. Both Joseph and Scheelhaase are still coaching this weekend in conference championship games.

Other candidates whose seasons must end before they can be formally announced include Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, and Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. All are involved in playoff games this weekend.
