The Vegas Golden Knights were supposed to be shorthanded Wednesday night. Instead, they looked deep.
Missing five players who competed in the gold medal game at the Olympics, the Knights rolled to a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena. Seven different players recorded multiple points, led by center Tanner Laczynski’s first career three-point night.
“It felt good. A lot of amazing hockey players out of the lineup,” Laczynski said. “It was just a good opportunity for myself and some other guys here.”
Laczynski, a 28-year-old AHL veteran called up from Henderson the day before, assisted on three goals — all primary. He entered the game with just four career NHL points.
The Knights fell behind 2-1 through two periods despite outshooting the Kings 15-11. Then the offense erupted in the third.
Colton Sissons and Brandon Saad, each returning from injuries that sidelined them for six weeks, scored 4:14 apart early in the period. Reilly Smith added another before Pavel Dorofeyev scored twice, including a power-play goal with 4:01 left to restore a two-goal lead.
“It seems like we were playing a basketball game tonight,” said Dorofeyev, who attended his first NBA game Tuesday. “Guys showed up at the end of the fourth quarter.”
Defensively, the Knights blocked 23 shots and committed only eight giveaways. Coach Bruce Cassidy praised the team’s structure.
“We didn’t give up odd-man rushes, the things like that that hurt you,” Cassidy said. “It was a lot of good in that part of the game.”
The win extended Vegas’s streak to three games. The five Olympians — Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, Mark Stone, Noah Hanifin and Shea Theodore — are expected to rejoin the team in Washington, D.C., for Friday’s game against the Capitals.
“That’s what good teams do. They pick up each other no matter what,” Dorofeyev said. “Maybe we looked a little different on paper tonight, but we’re still the Golden Knights and that’s how we play.”
