Short-handed Golden Knights rally past Kings 6-4 without five Olympians

The Vegas Golden Knights were missing five players who competed in the Olympic gold medal game Sunday, but that didn’t stop them from mounting a third-period comeback against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night.

Trailing 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Knights erupted for three goals in a 4:14 span early in the third period to take control and eventually win 6-4 at Crypto.com Arena.

Colton Sissons tied the game at 2-2 at 8:07 of the third, followed by goals from Brandon Saad at 10:05 and Reilly Smith at 12:21 to make it 4-2. Pavel Dorofeyev added a power-play goal with 4:01 left to extend the lead to 5-3, and Ivan Barbashev sealed it with an empty-netter with 28 seconds remaining.

Dorofeyev also scored in the first period, finishing with two goals on the night. Goaltender Adin Hill made 15 saves as the Knights improved to 28-16-14, winning their third straight game.

The five absent Olympians — Mark Stone, Mitch Marner, Shea Theodore, Jack Eichel, and Noah Hanifin — remained in either Las Vegas or Washington, D.C., after Team USA’s Eichel and Hanifin attended the State of the Union address Tuesday. Coach Bruce Cassidy said the hope is all five will rejoin the team for Friday’s game against the Washington Capitals.

Despite the short-handed lineup, the Knights played a disciplined game, limiting turnovers and executing when it mattered. The Kings got third-period goals from Quinton Byfield and Brandt Clarke to keep it close, but Vegas held on for a memorable victory.
