Golden Knights Return From Maui Vacation, Begin Prep for Road Trip

Keegan Kolesar and Jeremy Lauzon belted out a Bruce Springsteen tune at a karaoke bar in Maui. It was just one moment from the Vegas Golden Knights’ group vacation during the Winter Olympic break, a mix of beverages, Super Bowl viewing, and much-needed rest for the players not competing in Italy.

That break ended Friday, as the Knights held their first practice in 15 days at City National Arena. With 13 skaters and goaltender Adin Hill on the ice, the focus was on shaking off the rust before a five-game road trip that starts Wednesday in Los Angeles.

“Just getting our details back,” Kolesar said. “The legs will come over time. If you’re skating so many times, you’re going to eventually get back to where you need to be.”

The Hawaiian contingent included Kolesar, Lauzon, Colton Sissons, Brett Howden, Brayden McNabb, and former teammate Chandler Stephenson. The 12-hour time difference made it tricky to follow Olympic action from Italy, but the Knights kept tabs, especially with a Canadian-heavy roster.

All 13 skaters and Hill gathered in the locker room to watch Canada rally from two goals down against Finland, securing a spot in Sunday’s gold medal match. The Knights have played a key role in Canada’s run: Mitch Marner scored the overtime winner against Czechia in the quarterfinals, and Shea Theodore netted his first Olympic goal to tie Finland 2-2 in the third period Friday.

“Rely on the Golden Knights to step up in those big-game moments and they find a way to produce,” Kolesar said. “Very excited for those guys.”

Added Lauzon on Theodore’s goal: “I was pumped. It was a great play by him. Great shot. Big-time play by a big-time player.”

Assistant coach John Stevens ran practice in place of Bruce Cassidy, who is away with Team Canada. With a limited roster, Stevens emphasized structure over intensity.

“We’re just trying to get the legs back,” Stevens said. “We’re just trying to structure the drills. We’re not practicing as hard, but we can still get the reps that they need.”

Friday also marked the return of three injured players: McNabb (upper body, out since Dec. 31), Sissons (upper body, last played Jan. 14), and winger Brandon Saad (undisclosed, last played Jan. 8).

“I think any time you get a player back, it’s a big boost to your team,” Stevens said. “All our guys that have been out of our lineup are veteran guys that play key situations.”

The Knights will soon welcome back Tomas Hertl, Rasmus Andersson, and Akira Schmid, whose Olympic teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals. With 25 games remaining in the regular season, the team is eager to get back to full strength.

“I think it’s good to be back at it, playing high-intensity hockey,” Lauzon said. “Good for the bodies. We got a big 25 games coming up.”
